Learning More About Your Ancestors

- About Kendall Ancestry
- New To Family History?
- Starting A Family Tree
- Learning More About Your Ancestors
- Compiling a Family History
- Experienced Researcher?
After you have learned about your ancestors from family records and relatives, you will be wondering where to go next to build your family tree. This depends on the questions you were able to answer in the immediate family phase of your search.
Researching your family tree is an enriching experience. Searching for resources that can help you make the connections from generation to generation further back in time has many possibilities. Your focus needs to be first to learn the basic information that will help you identify your ancestor as a unique person in time - birth, marriage and death dates and places. There is much more you will want to learn as you create your family history however.
Your ancestor existed in a unique period of time and participated in events that were part of the history that occurred at that time. Capturing this means you will go beyond the basic life events and enjoy investigating the lives of your ancestors and just how they fit into that period of history. Typically, certain institutions or organizations existed at the time your ancestor lived and this is where there will be records, as well as in family and possibly private collections of materials. So, how do you know where to find the records you are seeking?
FINDING RESOURCES
Resources are abundant in an array of organizations -- government agencies, libraries, historical societies, genealogical societies, other specialized and private institutions. Many records today are accessible on-line and while not all records can be found on-line, these can be very useful. Your challenge is understanding the types of RECORD SOURCES AVAILABLE, becoming familiar with the KIND OF INFORMATION in the different sources that exist AND knowing WHERE TO FIND the type records you need for your specific research concerns.
Using the Research Topics (17 areas) and Record Types (over 700) in the Records Repository noted here at Kendall Ancestry can help you in getting a grasp of the possibilities for finding information about your ancestors. When a name originates or appears in a country, you will find these in the drop down menu of the SEARCH RECORD page.
USEFUL TOOLS
There are many useful tools that you can rely on as a guide to researching your ancestors. There are so many, I will highlight the comprehensive ones, some of which I have included based on my own experience from over 35 years of research and work experience. Throughout Kendall Ancestry I have also noted useful resources. In some cases you may want to purchase the material as a reference tool or subscribe on-line. Again, I do not recommend subscribing unless you are sure the site offers you a number of possibilities or a key prospective answer you can find nowhere else. You may also want to join a local history or genealogy society, or an on-line forum, as well. Organization members and publications can be very helpful for networking and learning how to perform research. On-line forums can be particularly useful if the research interests of subscribers are clearly presented and communication about these interests is archived. You may find others with similar research interests you can exchange information with about your ancestor search.
Comprehensive resources organized by country follow. These countries were chosen for evidence of KENDALL sounding surnames or the probability they can exist based on surname etymology. See KENDALL SURNAME FORMS for more information. As the website progresses additional countries will be included as KENDALLs are identified in them.
The resources below include major archives, libraries, societies and research tools. These are or will all be tapped for information to be included in KENDALL ANCESTRY. The United States and England are listed first since the majority of records regarding the KENDALL surname, based on current repository information, are in these countries. An abbreviation for each country used in this website is also indicated. See ABBREVIATIONS for additional applications. Remember, each country has a cadre of recommended resources and links to additional on-line research tools often cited specifically for the benefit of family history researchers or genealogists. Be sure to look for these in furthering your research.
Whether you are new at tracing your family tree or a seasoned researcher, there is always something new that can be learned about searching for one’s ancestry. See the next section if you are an EXPERIENCED RESEACHER.
REPOSITORIES & RESEARCH TOOLS By COUNTRY
Entries of research tools do not include year, publication date or edition since there are many reprints and updated editions that occur of sources. This will need to be looked into by each researcher. In addition to specific citations provided below for major repositories of specific countries related to KENDALL origins. Be sure to check the following websites for finding aids and repositories around the world. Many repositories, for which the native language IS NOT English, have an option for English and some have on-line databases with catalogues or indexes. These are noted below by English Option/Search Option.
- GET STARTED WITH FAMILY HISTORY. GUIDES. Family Search. Family History Library. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
- REPOSITORIES of PRIMARY SOURCES. Terry Abraham, University of Idaho.
- National Library Websites. University of Queensland. Australia.
Be sure to use their link to NATIONAL LIBRARY CATALOGUES WORLDWIDE.
[These will be checked for Kendall materials over time.]
- PORTALS TO THE WORLD. Library of Congress.

Please advise Denise Mortorff if you come across major resources and links you feel would be a good addition to these research tools. Thank you.

The Library’s aim for each collection is generally to be exhaustive: to include any significant works of recorded knowledge, in all relevant languages, for a necessarily defined and limited subject field. “The National Archives is also the official archive for England, Wales and the central UK government, containing 900 years of history from Domesday Book to the present, with records ranging from parchment and paper scrolls through to recently created digital files and archived websites. Increasingly, these records are being put online, making them universally accessible.”

FINDING RESOURCES Resources are abundant in an array of organizations -- government agencies, libraries, historical societies, genealogical societies, other specialized and private institutions.
USEFUL TOOLS There are many useful tools that you can rely on as a guide to researching your ancestors.
[These will be checked for Kendall materials over time.] - PORTALS TO THE WORLD. Library of Congress.
“Portals to the World contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about the nations and other areas of the world” arranged by country or area with links. - International Council on Archives
“The mission of ICA is to promote the preservation and use of archives around the world.”
Please advise Denise Mortorff if you come across major resources and links you feel would be a good addition to these research tools. Thank you.
